How this calculator works

We convert your current annual heating dollars into annual BTUs of heat delivered (using standard fuel energy content and combustion efficiency), then compute how many kWh a heat pump at your specified COP would need to deliver the same heat — and how much that costs at your electric rate.

What's a COP and what number should I use?

  • COP 2.0-2.2: Older-design or cold-climate installs in very cold regions (ME, VT, MN) using backup resistance heat.
  • COP 2.5-3.0: Typical modern ducted heat pump in a mixed climate (NY, PA, OH).
  • COP 3.5-4.0: Mini-split ductless in a mild climate, well-sized.

2026 federal rebates you can stack

  • HEAR (High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate): Up to $8,000 for a heat pump. Income-qualifying households. State-administered, live in most states by mid-2026.
  • HOMES (Home Efficiency Rebates): Up to $4,000 for whole-home efficiency projects that achieve 20-35% energy reduction.
  • 25C tax credit: 30% of install cost, capped at $2,000/yr.
